Wood filaments are special types of 3D printing materials that combine a biodegradable PLA polymer with fine particles of real wood (e.g. oak, beech, pine or bamboo). The result is a material that prints as easily as standard PLA filaments, but the finished print has the appearance, texture and even scent of natural wood.
These filaments are ideal for design, artistic and decorative projects, where not only the shape, but also the aesthetic and tactile impression is important.

Thanks to the content of real wood fibres (usually 10–40%), prints made from wood filaments have a matte, natural surface and give off a light wood smell during printing. After printing, objects can be sanded, painted or varnished just like real wood, which allows for perfect finishing and customisation of models.
In addition, the colour of the final print can be influenced by the nozzle temperature – at higher temperatures the filament darkens and gains a “burnt” effect, giving each model a unique look.
Main properties of wood filaments:
Natural look and smell of real wood
Matte surface with minimal visible layers
Easy printing similar to PLA
Can be sanded, varnished and painted
Biodegradable and eco-friendly material
No synthetic odour – pleasant wood aroma during printing
Suitable for open-frame printers without a heated chamber
Despite their natural appearance, wood filaments are easy to print, because they are based on a PLA polymer – the easiest material to work with in 3D printing. It is usually enough to slightly adjust nozzle temperature and print speed to prevent burning of the wood particles.
Recommended print settings:
Nozzle temperature: 190–220 °C
Bed temperature: 40–60 °C (optional)
Nozzle: 0.5 mm or larger (helps prevent clogging from wood fibres)
Print speed: 40–60 mm/s
Due to the wood fibre content, it is recommended to clean the nozzle after printing to avoid clogging.
Wood filaments are popular for printing statues, figures, trophies, boxes, signs, furniture prototypes and home accessories. The prints have a warm, natural feel and, thanks to their texture, are often used as an alternative to real wood in design applications.
The material is also suitable for promotional items, architectural models, presentation samples and gift packaging, where visual impact plays a key role.
Because it is a blend of PLA and natural wood fibres, wood filament is environmentally friendly and biodegradable. Its production is energy efficient and free of toxic additives, making it an excellent choice for sustainable 3D printing.
