Primers – the foundation for maximum adhesion

Primers (also called adhesion promoters) create an intermediate layer between the adhesive and the substrate, which improves adhesion, evens out the surface and prevents its absorbency. They are used mainly on polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), silicones or powder-coated surfaces, where standard adhesives do not provide sufficient adhesion. They are applied in a thin layer with a brush or cloth, and after a short flash-off time the surface is ready for bonding. A typical example are primers from 3M – such as 3M Primer 94 for VHB tapes.

Activators – instant support for curing

Activators are used to accelerate the curing of adhesives, especially cyanoacrylate (instant) adhesives, but also other types that react with moisture. They are applied to one of the bonded surfaces, where they reduce the curing time from minutes to seconds. At the same time, they ensure uniform curing even in areas with low humidity and improve adhesion on passive materials such as glass, aluminium or stainless steel. The use of an activator is ideal for quick repairs, series production or assembly, where speed and accuracy are crucial.

Cleaners – guarantee of a perfectly clean surface

Cleaners are used to remove dust, grease, adhesive residues and other contaminants that could impair adhesion. They are designed for surface pre-treatment before applying adhesives, tapes or sealants. A quality cleaner, such as 3M Surface Cleaner or isopropyl alcohol (IPA), ensures a clean, dry and ideally prepared substrate without damaging the material. Proper cleaning of the surface is essential especially for metals, plastics, glass and painted surfaces, where adhesion can increase by tens of percent.
