What is the difference between a laser printer and an LED printer?

We recently covered the topic of inkjet printers. Today, therefore, we will take a look at laser printers and printers equipped with LED technology. Both types of printers, although they operate on a similar principle, have not only specific advantages but also limitations.

Laser Printer

Laser printers operate on the so-calleddry electro-optical principle, in which a laser beam with optics, a photosensitive conductive drum coated with a selenium layer, toner, and a pair of fusing rollers play a substantial role.

The selenium layer on the surface of the conductive cylinder responds to illumination by changing its electrical charge. When the laser beam is directed by movable optics onto the electrically conductive cylinder of the printer, the electric charge changes at the point of impact. In this way, all image or text characters are marked on the cylinder and gradually transferred.

The application of toner to the designated text or image file is then handled by a cylinder with a magnetic surface. This cylinder ensures that toner dust particles adhere only to those areas of the conductive cylinder that have been hit by the laser beam. Only now can paper enter the entire process. However, after the image or text is printed, before the paper leaves the printer, it passes between the pressure roller and the fuser roller, where the toner is fixed to the paper at a temperature of approximately 200 °C.

LED printer

As we already indicated in the introduction, the operating principle of printers equipped with LED technology is similar to that of laser printers. The basic difference lies in the simpler design solution for the light marking of image or text points on the image cylinders of these printers. Simply put, complex laser optics are replaced by LEDs in this case, which means that LED printers also have fewer mechanical moving parts.

LED printers are equipped with print heads featuring one or more rows of diodes, which create individual image points across the entire width of the imaging drum and allow the paper to pass through directly. The image drum is illuminated by diodes all at once across entire lines, and after the text is marked, the process you already know well follows. Toner is applied to the areas of the drum exposed by the light of the LEDs, and after being transferred onto the paper, it is fixed in the fusing rollers.

Just like with LED technology, the entire printing process in a laser printer naturally takes place very quickly and occurs during the smooth passage of paper through the printer.

Advantages and disadvantages of individual solutions

It is therefore suitable wherever high-volume black-and-white printing of text documents is required in particular. Another advantage of laser printers is the high-capacity paper feeder and toner, which does not need to be replaced as often as with other types of printers. The disadvantages of laser printers are generally lower color print quality, bulkier design, and a higher purchase price of the printer.

Laser printers usually have low operating costs, offer high print speed, and above-average print quality on all commonly used types of paper. The main advantage of LED printers is above all their aforementioned structural simplicity. LED printers therefore achieve high reliability and long service life due to the absence of complex optics and a smaller number of moving parts. At the same time, their design can be smaller in size. Thanks to the LED technology used, these printers offer high print quality, low operating costs, and unmatched print speed, up to 50 A4 pages per minute for some models. One disadvantage of LED printers may be slightly lower print quality compared to conventional laser printers.
