What is a cartridge?

Nowadays, we probably all know that a cartridge is an ink cartridge for a printer. What kinds exist, however, is not yet known to everyone. Are you interested in how inkjet printing works or in the differences between inkjet cartridges? What is a print head and what is it used for? You will find out everything in this article.

Two basic categories of ink cartridges:

dye-based inks - consist of dyes that dissolve in liquid

pigment-based - they use an ultra-fine powder that is dispersed in a liquid

Inkjet printer printing technology

During printing, the ink is sprayed onto the paper in small droplets using electrical impulses. These droplets then create the final print.

Cartridges are manufactured in two basic variants

Cartridge with printhead

Cartridge without printhead

The print head is essentially the medium that transfers ink onto the paper.

Single-use print head vs. Fixed print head

Cartridges that have a print head can generally be referred to as cartridges with a disposable print head. With every cartridge, we also replace the print head, so we don't have to worry about anything.Cartridges that do not have a print head are for printers where the print head is already built in, i.e. a fixed print head. These cartridges are mounted onto the print head as reservoirs.

Differences Between a Disposable Print Head and a Fixed Print Head

The fundamental difference between a cartridge with a print head and a cartridge without a print head is the price. Cartridges with a disposable print head are noticeably more expensive. If we look at printer prices, the purchase price of a printer without a built-in print head is lower. The disadvantage is that the color cartridge with the print head is made in a tri-color version, which means that the cartridge contains all three colors together. If one color runs out, you won't be able to print anything with this cartridge anymore. Color cartridges without a print head are sold individually, which means that each color has its own separate cartridge. If you run out of a specific color, simply replace it with a new one. The problem only arises at the moment when the built-in print head breaks down. For some types of printers, it can be replaced, but this is not the case for all of them. In that case, there is nothing left to do but get a new printer.
