Blu-ray discs got their name from the technology using a blue laser. The reason the laser is blue is its shorter wavelength. The wavelength of the blue laser is 405 nm, unlike the wavelength of the red laser, which is 650 nm and is used for writing to DVD discs. The advantage of the blue laser with its shorter wavelength means that it is possible to write smaller data spirals, thereby increasing the amount of data on the disc.
Blu-ray discs provide 3 to 5 times greater storage capacity than recordable DVD discs and enable recording, rewriting, and playback of high-definition (HD) video.
