Printer warranty claim – will the use of non-original toner affect it?

When buying a printer, probably none of us examines the warranty terms in detail or even considers that by purchasing the device, we are essentially agreeing to the printer manufacturer's terms. There is nothing wrong with it, and in principle everything is fine. Of course, right up to the moment you decide to buy a compatible, that is, non-original cartridge.

Compatible cartridges are, of course, very popular. We will not discuss all their advantages in detail here, as we have already mentioned them in the article Which toner to buy: original or non-original toner. Let us at least mention the attractive price, which is probably the most decisive factor. Manufacturers of original cartridges naturally do not like this and claim something entirely different. According to them, their consumables are unique, one-of-a-kind, and tailored precisely to the printers. On the other hand, they warn against using compatible cartridges, which in their opinion do not offer adequate print quality or performance.

To you, as a printer user, the competitive struggle between printer manufacturers and alternative cartridge manufacturers could essentially be irrelevant. However, from the perspective of a potential warranty claim for the device in the event of a printer malfunction using a compatible toner, the seller's position, or rather, manufacturer, must be interested.

Competition knows no boundaries

While some manufacturers of original toners and ink cartridges limited themselves to the aforementioned declarations of the quality of their products, others went a step further and refused to honor the warranty on printers damaged by non-original consumables.

However, that was still far from everything, and much more drastic measures also came into play, raising the blood pressure of many printer owners trying to reduce printing costs through compatible cartridges.

We can mention HP, which in the past changed the settings of its printers via a firmware update without any warning, so that they were only able to communicate with original cartridges equipped with HP security chips. HP printers therefore essentially did not accept any compatible ink cartridges or toners. At the time, HP justified its decision by citing alleged customer complaints from users who had problems with the quality of compatible ink cartridges and toners.

Such a practice naturally sparked a sharp wave of criticism and discontent among many customers. HP later changed its rhetoric and attempted to justify the adopted measure by invoking the protection of innovation and intellectual property. However, this did not convince the public very much, so in the end it did backtrack after all and removed the restrictions on using cartridges from alternative manufacturers in later updates.

So what is the reality of a printer complaint?

Printer manufacturers, and therefore practically also the manufacturers of original cartridges, are well aware that distinctions need to be made even among alternative manufacturers of compatible toners or ink cartridges. Reputable manufacturers of compatible cartridges have sufficient technical facilities, and their products are manufactured in modern facilities. High-quality compatible toners and ink cartridges, like original cartridges, undergo rigorous quality testing. They thus fully comply with ISO standards.

Various printer manufacturers used provisions in their warranty terms stating that the warranty did not cover defects caused by the use of consumables and parts other than original ones.At present, however, the vast majority of printer manufacturers do not create any obstacles when handling warranty claims for printers using compatible cartridges. Certain complications with claiming the warranty may arise if the printer malfunction is indisputably and directly related to the use of a compatible toner. However, with high-quality compatible cartridges that meet ISO standards, the likelihood of damaging the printer is negligible, and you are more likely to encounter a warranty claim being denied because normal wear and tear or improper use of the device was found.
