What are GHS labels and what will you need to make them?

GHS = Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. The GHS operates within the United Nations and aims to unify important information on the hazardous physico-chemical properties of substances worldwide, thus protecting not only the health of workers and consumers but also the environment.

Whether you work in a company that manufactures chemicals, use them for your work or just sell them, you will have seen the GHS symbols on their packaging, whether it's an exclamation mark, a fish out of water or a skull. These symbols always have UN approved substances on them. But what is important for making GHS labels and what are you sure to use for this?

What do the labels have to look like?

Each GHS label must contain a coloured ( predominantly red ) GHS hazard symbol ( rhombus ) with a black symbol inside. Depending on the type of substance, there may be many such symbols and so each product may contain different symbols and even more at the same time. According to the latest legislation, the GHS label must not contain a blank rhombus.

It is also very important that the labels for printing GHS labels are made of a durable material ( PE labels = Polyethylene ), so that they last as long as possible on chemical packaging, even in very harsh conditions. This means that they should be resistant to UV radiation, water, tearing and especially chemicals. You can then stick them on a variety of packaging such as bottles, cans, but also jerry cans and barrels.
